World’s Fastest Everything

I love this video, because it shows a hidden link between these varied (and occasionally goofy) abilities. When we see somebody who’s superhumanly fast at something, we intuitively chalk it up to “natural speed” — the implication being that a regular person’s reflexes could never operate that fast.

But here –especially in slow-mo — we can better appreciate the real reason they’re so fast: efficiency. There are no wasted movements. They anticipate–each movement sets up the next. The cup-stacker, the stamper, the gun-reloader, even the pizza-maker share a stripped-down, restrained, targeted quality to their movements that is the true heart of speed — because they have systematically built skill circuits that are tight, restrained, and hugely efficient. (Well, except for that guy who removes his clothes in two seconds.  That is natural talent.)

    Sweet find, Dan! I love how you point out how “There are no wasted movements.” That’s such a huge principle! It can apply to every action we take on a daily basis, to every step we take pursuing a goal, to writing (No unnecessary words! — a rule I won’t pretend I’m not butchering even as I type these words)…to virtually anything we do, whether mentally or physically. No wasted movements. No unnecessary parts or steps. One can almost call these the ultimate training principles — that which all training strives for.
    I’ve always held the image of animation artists in my mind…the gorgeous simplicity of their drawings…intentionally reduced to their essential lines…for ease of reproduction by many different artists and scenes over the course of a project. Which reminds me of reproducible skills…and of marathon runners and pro cyclists for whom a single wasted movement can deliver harsh consequences over the course of a race.
    And hey, it seems possible that the fewer movements we waste, the longer our bodies will last over the course of a long life. Food for thought, perhaps…as long as you don’t waste a single “chewing motion.” Hey, dang it! Chewing IS a movement! (Oh, now you’re just being anal! Possibly, but I swear I save toilet paper by not wasting a single wiping motion. Well, “wiping” IS a movement…and no wasted movement means no wasted movement…)
    Oh, and yes, Dan, I have noticed the pattern you’ve followed as of late. First with the “Naked Teaching” and now with a double-whammy of “…a stripped-down quality to their movements” and the payoff with the guy who can remove his clothes in two seconds flat. Heh, heh. Sweeeeeeet, Dan. Sweeeeeeet. (Intentional or not!)
